Columbia fought hard to beat Netherlands 2-1 to become the second best team of the day in Calabar centre. The match turned out to be the best match so far in the centre , giving fans value for their money.
At kick off, the Netherlands came out with big guts trying to go for an early goal, but a more organized Columbia defence soaked all the pressure before turning the heat on the Holland boys.
The Netherlands had the highest strike at goal but failed to score in the first half, and also dominated the half 58% of ball possession. Satisfied with the players tight play none of the coaches made changes in the half. They went into the recess with no goal.
On resumption, the Columbians showed more knacks for goals and it paid off in the 56 minutes when Fabian Castillo enterprising runs yielded result. He gracefully wielded passed two defenders before delivering the telling shot beating the goalkeeper for the opener.
The game was more fiercely contested until a Netherlands striker was pulled down inside the Columbia 18-yard box for a penalty. The captain, Ogunzhan Ozayakup walked through and pumped the ball in.
Match winner Deiner Cordoba freed himself of two surging defenders before pumping home the edge cutter in the 72nd minute to give his side the day and three points.
Costa Rica and New Zealand settled theirs with a goal apiece to further make the zone’s contest more alluring in the days ahead.
