With two thrilling goals Obafemi Martins utilized his left foot effectively to take Nigeria to the 2010 World Cup billed to hold in South Africa. Nigeria turned on a late show to beat Kenya3-1 and secured a World Cup berth while Tunisia lost by a lone goal to Mozambique in the other match in the Group B.
Nigeria thus ended the qualifiers with 12 points while Tunisia with 11 points alongside Mozambique who defeated the Desert Eagles amassed seven points to secure the Orange African Nations Cup ticket.
Kenya Oliech opened scoring in the 16 minutes and the Harambee Stars held onto the lead till end of the first half. In the enthralling match Nigeria had few scoring chances before then but Ozase Odewingie and Mike Enemaro could not make good use of them.
The Eagles came back strong in the second half until Martins broke loose in the 62 minutes, slamming the ball into the net amidst a packed goal area, while Yakubu Aiyegbeni followed up with the second goal three minutes later.
As usual the Nigerian team failed to hold onto the lead allowing Kenya’s Wetende to nod home from a corner kick to secure a second equalizer of the match at 2-2.
Super striker Martins fired home the winner in the 83 minutes to give Nigeria the World Cup ticket against all odds.
