Super Eagles newly invited goalkeeper for the 2010 World Cup, Akpan Bassey says he will go all out to show the manager that he has all it takes to make the final World Cup list describing his invitation as a cal to serve his father land.
Akpan, who guided the post throughout the Eagles participation in the just concluded West African Nations Cup, held in Abeokuta, South West of Nigeria, told africanpsortsdigest.com Monday that this is his time and every step must be taken to become a regular Eagle.
“I’ve paid my dues having played in all the youth teams at the National level. I’ve done my best. I know that others based abroad have their own experiences, but the number one choice Vincent Enyeama started keeping for the senior national team while he was playing in the local league, and I don’t think am different,” said Akpan.
The Bayelsa United keeper thanked the Super Eagles new manager, Lars Lagerback for extending the invitation to him: “It will be a tough selection for the coaches considering the caliber of goalkeepers invited, but I know Nigeria will have the best of it as there will be stiff competition and only the bests will make it to the World Cup.
“I’m really working hard because this is a rare opportunity, and I don’t want to bungle it. Am ready for the challenges ahead,” said Akpan whose meticulous performance helped the Eagles to beat Senegal 2-0 in the final of the WAFU Cup last Sunday.
